Depression Suicide

Almost every person experiences some amount of sadness at some point of time in life. However this sadness and despair tends to go away with time. Depression however results in prolonged feelings of sadness, despair and hopelessness and these feelings tend to affect the quality of life in individuals going through these feelings. Depression tends to affect the normal functioning of such individuals and in some cases of depression suicide attempts may also occur.

In depression suicide possibility is quite high and so proper understanding of this illness is essential so as to prevent a suicide. With proper understanding of this condition it is possible to seek proper medical attention and thereby prevent a tragedy. Those suffering from this condition tend to experience intense sadness, irritability, hopelessness and may experience complete loss of interest in activities that were pleasurable at some point of time. Those suffering from depression may suffer from insomnia and may feel tired.

Depression may occur due to a combination of factors that include genetic, biochemical, environmental and psychological factors. Depression suicide is a major problem with as many as 32,000 deaths resulting from depression. Understanding depression and treating it in time is extremely important.

While depression may be caused due to genetic links and environmental factors some other events may contribute to the development of this illness. These other factors include problematic events such as trauma, bereavement, marital and relationships problems and stressful situations. Such events can trigger depressive episodes. In the absence of proper treatment for this illness the possibility of depression suicide is rather high.

Among the individuals who are clinically depressed around 15% of the deaths can be attributed to depression suicide. Research indicates that women are more susceptible to experiencing depression as compared to men. This is because hormonal, psychological and biological aspects may result in depression and women are also more vulnerable to experiencing higher amounts of stress. Men tend to deal with depression differently as compared to women. Depression suicide is also higher among men.

The possibility of depression suicide also increases with alcohol or drug use or the availability of lethal means. Higher suicides are observed among men because men are often less reluctant to seek medical intervention or to accept that they might be suffering from depression. Men are also more likely to seek relief in drugs or alcohol. In this condition as many as 8 to 25 suicide attempts may be conducted for every completion. Majority of these attempts are not discovered and so it is extremely important to identify depression and get medical help for it. These attempted suicides are an expression of distress and cannot be ignored as attention seeking acts.

Any depression suicide threats should not be taken lightly. Recognition and diagnosis of depression and timely medical intervention can go a long way in preventing suicide. The treatment plan for depression will be based on factors like the symptoms experienced, severity of these symptoms, duration for which the symptoms are experienced and possible history of depression within the family.

The medication for treating depression may include monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tryciclic antidepressants. It is important that the medication is regularly taken and it is also important to provide support to those suffering from depression.
