There is no specific depression test that can help in the diagnosis of this condition. However mental health professionals tend to refer to a manual called the diagnostic and statistical manual as it describes the different mental disorders. The mental health professionals tend to conduct a medical evaluation along with clinical interview for diagnosis of depression and this could be referred to as the depression test. The fourth edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual contains the descriptions of symptoms and these categories are used for the diagnosis. The mood symptoms in this manual related to depression include guilt and worthlessness while the behavioral symptoms include social withdrawal along with agitation. The cognitive symptoms tend to include thinking problems like problems in concentrating and decision making problems. The manual acts as a depression test as it allows for correct conceptualization of different aspects related to the depression. While there is no depression test that can be conducted to diagnose this condition the physician initially conducts a review of the physical health of the person. This review is conducted to identify any physical problems that can result in symptoms that are similar to those experienced in depression. If such physical problems are identified then treatment for the same can be taken. In some cases vitamin and mineral deficiencies or female hormonal changes and thyroid problems can also cause symptoms similar to depression. After this is ruled out a psychiatrist or psychologist may step in. A psychological evaluation in the form of history of the symptoms may be undertaken along with an understanding of the severity of the symptoms and their duration. Many therapists may use a questionnaire as a screening mechanism and this may be the depression test used for diagnosis of this condition. Such a depression test cannot be used in isolation and may be used as one of the diagnostic tools to identifying this condition. The psychologist will primarily try and identify the symptoms experienced and identify the underlying causes. Based on this the line of treatment may be identified. The other important aspects that are considered before diagnosing depression are the possibility of depression existing within the family and whether any family members received treatment for this condition. It is important to understand that at present there is no laboratory depression test that can be used to diagnose this condition. Any questionnaires cannot be used entirely in isolation for diagnosis of this condition. |
