Depression Treatment

Depression is a problematic condition in which a person is afflicted by a persistent sense of inadequacy along with feelings of sadness. This condition can negatively affect the activities the person undertakes as well as his life. Depression makes individuals lose interest in those activities that were previously enjoyed. With the aid of depression treatment such individuals can hope to overcome these feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

Depression is typically characterized by feelings of worthlessness, low self esteem and this can continuously affect the functioning and productivity of the individual. Before providing depression treatment it is important to identify the root cause of the depression. A person may suffer from depression following the occurrence of a stressful event or situation. In some other cases the depressive episode may not be caused by any such event.

Other factors that may be responsible for causing depression include hereditary predisposition along with environmental factors. Depression treatment is extremely crucial as this condition tends to affect all areas of a person’s life. The treatment for this condition includes a variety of options that need to be actively explored. The standard form of treatment for depression includes therapy along with antidepressant medication.

The correct form of depression treatment can be determined only after proper communication with the doctor. Among the different forms of treatment medication is commonly used. Antidepressant medicines are used to provide relief from the symptoms associated with this condition. People suffering from depression are better able to cope with the problems associated with depression after taking antidepressant medication.

Depression treatment involving antidepressant medication includes tricyclic drugs. These drugs including amitriptyline are widely used to treat this condition. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors including isocarboxazid are also commonly prescribed but these are used for patients suffering from atypical depression including depression caused by greater appetite or need for sleep. These medicines may also be prescribed for individuals who do not respond to tricyclic antidepressants.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are also a part of depression treatment and these days these medicines are proving to be quite effective in treating depression. These medicines have few side effects as compared to the tricyclic antidepressants. However some side effects of these medicines include sleep problems along with alteration in the sexual desire.

Some other medicines that may be prescribed as a part of depression treatment include antipsychotic medicines, anticonvulsants, antianxiety medicines and medicines like wellbutrin, maprotilint and trazodone. Along with medication psychotherapy has come to play a very important role in treating depression.

Other therapies that are used as a part of depression treatment include transcranial magnetic stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy, depression light therapy and vagus nerve stimulation. In recent times a number of alternative treatments have been identified and followed in treating depression. Herbal treatment is also explored for treating depression. Other forms of natural treatment that can be used for treating patients with depression include meditation along with yoga exercises. Aromatherapy, dieting and vitamins are also used for treating depression. These therapies aim to re-establish harmony or balance in the body and the lifestyle of the individual being treated.
