Mild Depression




Depression normally has symptoms that can be easily detected and that tend to affect the everyday activities of the individuals to a certain extent. Many individuals suffering from this condition tend to experience less interest in activities that they found pleasurable at some point of time. Normally mild depression has symptoms that are similar to those experienced in depression but the intensity is less.

In mild depression the individual may have some other symptoms that may be less prominent as compared to those in some of the severe disorders or conditions. Those suffering from mild depression may be able to live a normal life but may appear to be in low spirits and may not possess sharp thinking. They might continue doing the essential things like working and taking care of the family but they might stop all other activities.

In many cases of mild depression the performance of individuals in these essential activities may drop or they may find it difficult to cope with the tasks as they may be too tired. Individuals may also find it difficult to complete their household tasks or chores. This condition can be handled through a variety or a combination of treatments. Psychological treatment for mild depression can include talking therapy or treatment. Talking with a sympathetic and close friend or relative can prove to be helpful in dealing with this form of depression. Talking to a counselor or therapist can also be beneficial. In some cases the depression may be triggered off due to particular problems or issues.

Some problems like bereavement, marital issues, childhood abuse or sexual problems can result in mild depression and counseling directed towards these specific issues can be helpful. Such counseling can also be done by local agencies and self help groups dealing with these special problems.

Exercise can be extremely effective in providing relief from the symptoms associated with mild depression. The exercise program can include around three formal sessions every week and these sessions can be of moderate duration. Such sessions can last for around 10 to 12 weeks. Aerobic exercises along with other activities like swimming, jogging or brisk walking can ideally help in providing relief from depression. Vigorous team sports like netball and football can also be practiced.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can be helpful is recovering from mild depression. While antidepressant medicines are not recommended for mild cases of depression these may required to be taken in some circumstances. Where other treatments have not been helpful in treating mild depression medication may be needed.

Supportive counseling allows patients to narrate their story and requires the therapist to actively listen to the problems or issues. The therapist tries to understand as well as interpret the verbal as well as non verbal messages. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used to modify behavior patterns and thoughts through structured approaches. In interpersonal therapy the focus is on interpersonal experiences and the therapy tries to improve the quality of the relationships. Some herbal remedies like St John’s wort can also help in providing relief from moderate depression.
